History

To commemorate the Decade of Indigenous People, Neto Hatinakwe Onkwehowe installed a monument with this design on the Buffalo waterfront. Designed by Seneca artist Carson Waterman, the monument is 2′ x 3′ x 6′ and made of limestone.

Assistant Professor Ken Payne of Buffalo State College has guided Native American high school students in the making of this monument. The theme and text will honor the “Keepers of the Western Door” (Seneca People) and the Great Law of Peace Shown are: Seneca headdress, Hiawatha wampum belt, Red Jacket’s medallion, Seneca women’s nominating belt, and early Seneca pottery piece. This project was sponsored by Neto Hatinakwe Onkwehowe, an the Center for Development of Human Services at Buffalo State College.
